Macronutrient Breakdown
About Macronutrients
Macronutrients (macros) are the nutrients your body needs in large amounts to function properly: protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
Why Count Macros?
Counting macros gives you more precise control over your nutrition than simply counting calories. It can help you:
- Build muscle while minimizing fat gain
- Lose fat while preserving muscle mass
- Optimize performance for specific athletic activities
- Manage health conditions through nutrition
The Role of Each Macronutrient
- Protein (4 calories/g): Essential for muscle building, repair, and maintenance. Also promotes satiety.
- Carbohydrates (4 calories/g): Your body's preferred energy source, especially for intense activities.
- Fat (9 calories/g): Essential for hormone production, cell function, and nutrient absorption.
Calculation Methods
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is then adjusted based on your activity level.
Mifflin-St Jeor Formula:
For Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
For Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE):
TDEE = BMR × Activity Factor
Goal Adjustment:
Weight Loss: TDEE - 20% (moderate deficit)
Maintain Weight: TDEE
Weight Gain: TDEE + 15% (moderate surplus)
The calculator then divides your calorie target into macros based on your selected ratio or the default ratio for your goal.
Nutrition Tips
General Guidelines
- Protein: 1.6-2.2g per kg of bodyweight for active individuals
- Carbs: Higher for athletes and active individuals, lower for weight loss
- Fats: At least 0.5g per kg of bodyweight for hormone function
Tips for Success
- Focus on whole, unprocessed foods for most of your intake
- Distribute protein throughout the day (20-40g per meal)
- Prioritize complex carbs (whole grains, vegetables, legumes)
- Include healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil, fatty fish)
- Stay hydrated (3-4 liters of water per day for most adults)
- Adjust your macros if you're not seeing results after 2-3 weeks
Important Note:
This calculator provides estimates based on population averages. Individual needs may vary based on genetics, medical conditions, and specific goals. Consider consulting with a registered dietitian for personalized advice.
